Armorer's Note: The following is a very detailed step by step procedure for determining knee and elbow sizing. It is meant for people with little or no experience in armor fitting. If you have the experience to know what you need, then you can probably skip all of it, put your pads on, and simply measure how big you need your cops. Plug that into the sizes listed below. Done ;)
I would still recommend reading the section on the kind of pads we make our armor to work with.
Now if you are not experienced in fitting armor, then simply follow the step by step instructions below.
Elbow and Knee Sizes:
Method for determining your joint size:
Put your padding on. Place a pencil in the crease of your arm or leg. Keep your arm straight. Now measure from the pencil, over the pad, back to the pencil (see pic below).
For legs it is common to subtract 6 cm's from this measurement.
This is your P-P, point to point, measurement (or think of it as "pencil to pencil" measurement if it makes it clearer). This is your minimum P-P measurement. Now apply that to the charts below.
*Pads*:We DO NOT recommend the bulky white hockey/volleyball pads normally purchased from walmart or similiar places from the sporting goods sections. They are extremely bulky, are uncomfortable, only cover basically the front of the joint, and make your knee or elbow joint the equivalent of two sizes larger than the rest of your body. There IS a better way, and it is found in any pharmacy. They make thinner neoprene pads which offer 360 degree protection, are comfortable to wear, and you can then purchase armor which looks like it was made to fit you, not a hand me down from a bigger fighter. We all started with those uncomfortable white pads years ago, but there is now a much better alternative so check into it first before buying armor. We do not recommend one single source but here is a link to the kind of pads we recommend and a picture reference http://www.painreliever.com/captainsports_csneoelbow.html
We use the metric system in our shop so all measurements are in centimeters. See a conversion table if you need to convert these to inches. http://www.onlineconversion.com/length_common.htm
See the sizing pic explanation at the bottom of this page. Elbows and Knees are sized the same, yet will be made differently by the size and placement of the fan (if applicable).
*** SPECIAL NOTE *** We have updated our sizing page. Standardizing gothic and non-gothic into the same sizes, and adding more size categories. Do not worry, we are taking careful note as orders come in as to whether they were ordered with the old or new size charts.
